The Welbourne family has been
established as the village bakery in Navenby,
Lincolnshire since 1896.
The famous award winning Welbourne
Plum Bread has always been the
bakery’s speciality and still has the same recipe as it did all those years ago apart
from shortening being used instead of
lard. All cooked in the old coal fired
ovens until 1969 when they decided that
things had to change and replaced them
with electric ovens.
Welbourne Bakery is steeped in old recipes and traditions, especially with Pete’s grandmother’s home made cakes and a long list of pies, including game, festive and Lincoln Red Beef. Deliveries until their ‘one eyed horse Nelson’ died, to outlying villages was made by horse and cart. Now of course, deliveries are still made but in a more modern mode! Pete is only too happy to delight customers with stories about past delivery experiences, such as a woman giving birth whilst he made the weekly bread delivery and doctors having to be called due to a customer collapsing – which because of Pete’s quick thinking saved her life!
Welbourne's Award Winning Bakery is renowned and in a class of its own, so it is fair to say that anything that is tasted will be enjoyed from bread to sausage rolls to the famous Plum Bread.
